Willpower is a fickle friend. Sometimes we have it. Sometimes we don’t. And the worst part is that we can never count on willpower when we need it most.
Zig Ziglar is famous for saying “If you will do the things you need to do when you need to do them, you will be able to do the things you want to do when you want to do them!”
So, how do we develop the self-discipline to do what we need to do when we need to do them? Why is it so hard in the moment?
Psychologists call this activation energy. Activation energy is like trying to get an airplane to fly. It takes 5 times the energy to take off as it does to keep an airplane flying. So, the activation energy to start doing something when we aren’t moving is very high. If we are moving, the energy to keep moving is much less.
The longer we think about doing something, the lower the chances that we will actually do it. So, the best advice is to not think about doing it. Mel Robbins, motivational speaker says, “Don’t wait to feel like it. Just do it now.”
